Dorothy Chin, Ph.D.

Dorothy Chin is Assistant Research Psychologist at the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles.

She received a Bachelor's Degree in Human Biology from Stanford University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Hawaii.  Her dissertation focused on educational self-efficacy among Latino children in Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles.

Her current research interests include HIV/AIDS among women, cultural conceptions of the self, adolescent development, and family processes in cultural context.  She is also interested in epistemology and cross-cultural methods.

In 1996, she was awarded a seed grant from the UCLA AIDS Institute to study HIV risk among Asian/Pacific Islander women in Los Angeles County, a study that used both qualitative and quantitative methods.  She was also awarded grants to produce a documentary film on psychosocial issues faced by  women living with HIV.

In 1998, she served as consultant to the Getty Research Institute on a neighborhood mapping project, which focused on youth's subjective notions of their neighborhoods and perceptions of boundaries and safety.
